A tower bell whose perfect blue magic suppresses awakening, worshipped by communities built upon things too dangerous to rouse.
Overview
The Bell produces no audible sound nearby. Its tone is perceived through walls, foundations and dreams, spreading as an unnaturally even field of blue magic without the hot and dead spots found in ordinary enchantment.
It does not create sleep from nothing. It persuades an already sleeping being that waking would violate the shape of the world. The larger the sleeper, the greater the offering required to maintain that conviction.
History
The earliest account describes a mountain city whose inhabitants prayed to walls, offered gold at night and sacrificed people whenever the streets seemed too alert. The Bell hung in a tower that was later recognised as part of the creature pretending to be the city.
High Artifice scholars made copies for prisons and siege engines. Most failed because their makers reproduced the metal but not the bargain.
The present record
Three settlements claim to possess working Bells and refuse inspection. Detecting one does not reveal a normal spell so much as a flawless sea of uniform blue extending through the entire structure it protects.
One Bell has stopped accepting gold. Its keepers are debating what the change means before the sleeper does.
