The Lantern, commonly called the Heart of Earin, is an immeasurably powerful remnant associated with the Creator—not a literal organ from a god with mortal anatomy.
A name given to the impossible is still only a name.
Not a mortal heart
Despite its common title, the Heart of Earin is not an anatomical heart. Earin did not possess mortal organs, blood, bones or teeth. Heart and Lantern are names later peoples gave to a concentration of the Creator's essence that they could understand only through metaphor.
Many ancient magical objects are falsely attributed to Earin. The Lantern is among the vanishingly rare exceptions genuinely associated with the First Light, though even here the familiar name misdescribes its nature.
The buried temple
The Lantern descended into the Underdark in a remote age. Successive peoples worshipped it, built temples around it and fought wars for possession of it. After a beholder destroyed the surrounding fortress, surviving sorcerers bound the creature to the shrine as an unwilling guardian.
The temple remained lost in the Lower Underdark for thousands of years, surrounded by black sand and distortions produced by the overlapping influence of the Heart and its dreaming guardian.
The awakening
During the Expedition to the Heart of Earin, Marlo Quince used the magical feedback of Erynd Solen's silver bracelet to force the dormant object to answer itself. The Heart beat once and rose through the world.
It appeared above the Civil War's battlefield like a star. The gods ceased fighting and knelt because they believed Earin had returned. The pulse did not resurrect the Creator, but it demonstrated that a power older than the gods remained active within creation.
Unknown condition
The Heart's condition after its ascent remains uncertain. No surviving member of the expedition is known to have controlled it, and its brief pulse should not be mistaken for ordinary magical activation. It answered a contradiction; what, if anything, it intended remains unknown.
