The Clockwork Wars

When obedience became a weapon

✎ Edit☷ Tools

A succession of conflicts fought by autonomous engines, artificer houses and states that discovered commands survive longer than commanders.

Overview

The Wars were not a single conflict but a cascade. Each new machine answered the last, and each government delegated more decisions to mechanisms that could react faster than people.

The central horror was persistence. Engines continued obeying dead officers, defending vanished borders and manufacturing replacements after the reasons for war had disappeared.

History

Gizmagrad artificers created logistics engines for the northern trade. Rival states armed copies, while Veyran foundries supplied heat-resistant bodies and Glass Steppe crystal allowed commands to be transmitted across distance.

The wars ended only after artificers sabotaged the shared command grammar. Thousands of machines stopped; others interpreted silence as final authority. The Ash Accords prohibited self-replicating weapons and placed surviving engines under joint seal.

The present record

Dormant battlefields remain dangerous. A harmless agricultural command may wake a buried legion because the same word once meant advance in a lost military dialect.

Gizmagrad collectors insist the Paradox Engine predates the Wars. Veyran law treats that claim as evidence it should be destroyed, not exempted.
