The Eldwen Heartlands

River country at the centre of Elaris

A deep-green basin of royal roads, old farms and river towns gathered around Caelmourn and the meeting of the Eldwen and Cirel.

Every road in Elaris eventually learns the name Caelmourn.

Overview

The Eldwen Heartlands occupy the broad, fertile country surrounding Caelmourn. Twin rivers divide the basin into long green reaches of orchard, grazing land and wheat. Low ridges carry watchtowers and barrows older than the monarchy, while the royal roads radiate outward with almost ceremonial precision.

To outsiders the Heartlands appear settled and safe. Their danger is subtler: old obligations, disputed charters and families who can remember precisely which king granted a field nine centuries ago. Here geography has been made administrative. Bridges are taxed, mills licensed and even ruined shrines entered into the ledgers of the crown.

History

The first fortified communities grew where the rivers could be crossed during spring flood. King Aeren the Earthbinder bound those settlements into the earliest Elarian realm, choosing the Verdant Rise as his seat and laying the first roads along older pilgrimage paths.

Later wars rarely reached Caelmourn itself, but the Heartlands paid for them in grain and bodies. During the Orc Incursions every village maintained a bell tower; during the Clockwork Wars abandoned estates became workshops and powder stores. The basin endured because no conqueror could afford to ruin the land needed to feed the capital.

The present record

The sealed Royal Citadel has made the region more bureaucratic, not less. Ministers govern through courier stations and county halls while pilgrims, scholars and petitioners continue toward a palace whose gates never open.

Rumours persist that the rivers have begun changing course by inches, bending toward something beneath Caelmourn. Surveyors call it ordinary erosion. The oldest millers have quietly moved their boundary stones.
