Ishra

The Candlebound

✎ Edit☷ Tools

Ishra is the small, stubborn light of shelter found in darkness, a forgotten guide who can never leave the flame she carries.

The light is not the road. It is the promise that the road has somewhere to end.

The traveller in the candle

Ishra appears as a cloaked figure no taller than the flame that contains her. Legends say she was once a mortal guide who carried strangers through a divine night and bound her soul to the last candle when every larger light failed.

She can travel only as flame is passed from one wick to another. If the final light dies, she vanishes until relit by someone offering shelter without payment.

Shelter before questions

The Candlebound teaches that a person in immediate danger must first be warmed, fed and allowed to sleep. Names, loyalties and payment can be discussed after dawn.

This makes her beloved along hostile roads and controversial at borders. Her faithful have sheltered fugitives and criminals as well as innocents, accepting that mercy before judgement sometimes carries risk.

Doorway shrines

An Ishran shrine is a candle set within a small hooded niche beside a door. The flame signifies one place where darkness may approach without being invited inside.

Innkeepers light a second candle from it for any traveller who leaves before sunrise. The traveller carries the flame to the next shelter, extending a chain of guidance no central church controls.

The last lamp

During disaster, Ishran custom requires the final lamp be reserved for evacuation rather than worship. Saving ritual light while a person remains lost would betray the power it represents.

Maltris protects the darkness around Ishra's flame, while Aestra carries it along the road. Though small and nearly forgotten, the Candlebound is one of the few powers welcomed in temples of both gods.
