Maltris

The Silent Watcher

✎ Edit☷ Tools

Maltris guards what darkness shelters, watching the night without demanding that everything hidden be dragged into light.

Not all darkness conceals a blade. Sometimes it conceals the hand the blade would find.

Watcher at the edge of firelight

Maltris took form from the first shadow cast by created light. He is neither enemy nor servant of the dawn, but keeper of the necessary privacy in which frightened, hunted or unfinished things can survive.

His face is never shown. Art depicts a hooded figure whose cloak becomes the surrounding night, with only one patient silver eye visible.

The right to remain unseen

Maltrian doctrine treats secrecy as a shelter that can be used well or badly. A hidden refugee and a concealed murderer both occupy darkness; the Watcher's clergy are judged by whether they learn the difference before revealing either.

They oppose forced confession and casual surveillance, but preserve evidence of abuses conducted behind closed doors. Silence is sacred only while it prevents harm rather than enabling it.

Night houses

Temples open at dusk and offer anonymous beds, sealed testimony and guides through dangerous streets. No visitor is required to give a true name on the first night.

Clergy communicate with shuttered lanterns and reflective marks visible only by moonlight. City watches sometimes distrust them until a missing child, threatened witness or hunted dissident needs to disappear safely.

The Long Vigil

Senior priests complete one night each month alone beyond the settlement's last light. They watch without fire, speaking or sleep, then return at dawn to record what moved in the dark and what merely seemed to.

The rite trains restraint. Maltris is believed to favour the guardian who waits long enough to understand a threat over the hero who attacks the first shape they fear.
