Mournspire

Mournspire is a divine resonance within certain ancient stones, calling listeners toward a tower no map can hold in one place.

The tower does not move. It merely persuades the road that it has always led there.

The tower heard before it is seen

Mournspire may be a god, a place or the echo of a structure raised from Earin's bone. Travellers first hear a note below ordinary sound. Days later every footstep, hammer strike and heartbeat seems to repeat it.

The tower appears on different horizons, always black, narrow and farther away than the landscape permits.

Resonant compulsion

Those attuned to the note begin changing their route without noticing. They select roads, companions and supplies that serve a pilgrimage they have never consciously decided to make.

Near the Spire, spoken disagreement becomes physically painful. Groups fall into rhythmic unanimity, marching and breathing together until individual intention is nearly impossible.

The stone choirs

Devotees cut standing stones tuned to fragments of the note and arrange them in valleys. Wind creates a choir that can direct entire crowds.

Some masons study these stones defensively, marking dangerous resonances in foundations and bridges. Others believe completing the lost chord will bring the true Mournspire permanently into the world.

Breaking the rhythm

Resistance uses deliberate irregularity: mismatched steps, overlapping songs and tools struck without pattern. Voryn's clergy are unexpectedly effective because sacred disorder interrupts the compulsion.

A person leaving the influence is encouraged to make one small unnecessary choice each hour. The act restores the muscles of preference before greater decisions are attempted.
