Nathiel governs water and the honest movement of emotion, teaching that what cannot change will eventually drown beneath what can.
The sea keeps no shape, yet no hand can command it to be less than the sea.
Keeper of moving water
Nathiel was charged with guiding the waters that flowed across Earin's fallen body. They appear differently in every tradition—woman, man, neither, or a figure whose features shift like reflections on a tide.
Rivers are called Nathiel's open thoughts and the sea their unguarded heart. Flood and drought are not treated as moods of punishment, but as signs that a natural passage has been blocked or abused.
Emotion without shame
The Tidekeeper's faith teaches that grief, anger and joy become dangerous when denied a course. Feeling is neither virtue nor sin; what matters is where it is allowed to carry the person.
Nathiel is therefore invoked at funerals, reconciliations and before long voyages. Their clergy are trained to listen without forcing calm, an unusual sacred discipline in courts that prefer tidy answers.
River houses and sea temples
Permanent temples stand on pilings or bridge foundations so water can move beneath them. Inland priests keep a continuously circulating basin, never permitting the sacred water to stagnate.
Offerings are soluble or recoverable: salt, flower petals, spoken names and knots untied above the current. Throwing metal or lasting refuse into a river is considered an insult disguised as devotion.
The Returning Tide
Once each year communities carry vessels of river water to the sea, or sea water as far inland as they can travel, symbolically returning emotion to a greater whole. Estranged families often meet along the route.
Nathiel's oldest prophecy says every wall will one day become a shoreline. Scholars disagree whether this promises adaptation, warns of catastrophe, or remembers a world before land had settled into its present shape.
