Overview
Talren occupies a warm southern delta divided by engineered canals and white-stone cities. Citizenship is tied to ward membership, tax service and participation in public votes that can last for days.
Its power lies in trustworthy measures. Talren weights, seals and letters of credit are accepted from the Crownspines to the Ashen Littoral. Even enemies often settle wars using Talren auditors.
History
The republic emerged when canal guilds purchased the debts of a failing dynasty and discovered they already controlled every practical function of government. The last king was retained as Keeper of Festivals until the office quietly became elective.
Talren funded both anti-Gizmagrad coalitions and profited enormously from reconstruction after the Drowning. Its public banks helped create the Seven Ports system while ensuring that several members remained permanently indebted.
The present record
The Republic presents itself as rational and modern, but old ward cults govern which days contracts may be signed. Political reformers seek votes for non-property citizens; the canal houses argue this would allow the rivers to govern themselves.
Talren surveyors are buying land around newly opened Deep Road entrances, suggesting a trade strategy decades ahead of its neighbours.
