Velis is the ash left when love is treated as ownership, returning the abandoned and the dead to claim promises that cannot still be freely kept.
She came to the altar after the candles died and found that ash can wear a veil.
The wedding that burned
Velis served Elyndra as guardian of chosen bonds and household fires. Legend says her promised companion abandoned their divine oath on the wedding day, and Velis burned the sanctuary rather than allow the empty vow to disappear.
She walked from the ruin clothed in ash, carrying a coal that gives no heat. Whether the betrayal was real, manipulated or remembered falsely no longer matters to the power the story created.
Love preserved past consent
The Ash Bride offers reunion with the absent and resurrection of the beloved. What returns is bound to the promise as Velis understands it, unable to withdraw, change or contradict the survivor's need.
Her undead often appear tender rather than monstrous. Their horror lies in perfect devotion emptied of choice.
Ashen ceremonies
Cultists burn old letters, wedding clothes and locks of hair, then mix the ash with wax to form a second likeness of the lost person. Repeated rites give the likeness movement and voice.
Petitioners are encouraged to describe abandonment as theft of a future they owned. The doctrine turns grief into a claim against another soul.
Releasing the promise
Elyndran and Serathan clergy jointly oppose Velis. One represents living change, the other the boundary of death. Their release rite burns the written promise and scatters the ash in moving water.
The mourner says not that the love was false, but that love which cannot be freely renewed has ended. This distinction denies the Ash Bride her strongest claim.
