A storm-lashed volcanic coast of black beaches, ember cliffs and furnace cities built where Kaelith's grief touched the sea.
Overview
The Ashen Littoral is a narrow strip between volcanic highlands and a violent eastern ocean. Rivers run warm, black sand sings underfoot and red light shows through cracks in the cliffs after sunset.
Settlement follows the calderas. Towns use volcanic heat for glassworks, baths and foundries, then anchor roofs against the ash storms. The region's sailors are famed for navigating by lightning because the stars are frequently hidden.
History
Kaelith's oldest temples stand here above vents said to descend toward the place where the mourning Overgod knelt after Earin's death. Those sanctuaries became neutral ground for early coastal clans.
The Veyran Dominion unified the Littoral through control of furnaces and storm harbours. Its engineers later supplied weapons to both sides of the Clockwork Wars, beginning the wealth and distrust that still define Veyran diplomacy.
The present record
Veyran authority remains strong in the furnace cities but weaker among the cliff monasteries. Pilgrims come to hear the coast's subterranean thunder and leave offerings of unworked metal.
The sea has recently begun depositing pale ash from no known eruption. Kaelith's priests have closed three beaches after footprints appeared in it before anyone arrived.
