Kaelith

The Heart of the Creator

Kaelith was formed from Earin's capacity for passion, invention and attachment: the divine impulse that loved creation for what it might become rather than only for what it had been designed to be. Images show a figure of molten bronze, gender and features shifting through ember and smoke, with a forge-bright heart visible beneath the ribs.

Artists, lovers, revolutionaries and all who make something the world did not request claim Kaelith as patron. The Overgod is generous with inspiration and notoriously difficult to separate from the consequences of acting upon it.

The war against Earin

Kaelith joined Aurelion and Verris when Earin tried to command creation into perfect obedience. Of the Three, Kaelith understood most fiercely that a living thing denied the freedom to change had already been destroyed.

Yet Kaelith alone mourned the Creator after the sundering. The Heart of Flame held that resistance had been necessary and the killing still a tragedy, two truths the younger pantheon repeatedly tries to make into one.

The god who remained

While Aurelion withdrew to the Bright Expanse and Verris to the Deep Archive, Kaelith remained close to the mortal world. Volcanoes, sudden artistic movements, revolutions and impossible acts of devotion are all described as places where the god's nearness becomes visible.

Kaelith does not rule a stable realm. The divine court appears wherever people gather to create under pressure: a besieged workshop, a forbidden theatre, a kitchen feeding a rebellion or a lover's vigil beside the dying.

Worship of the living flame

Kaelith's temples are unfinished by design. Each generation adds a chamber, paints over a wall or changes the central image. To preserve the building exactly would turn devotion to creation into worship of a completed past.

The faithful light two flames: one for desire and one for consequence. A prayer is not complete until the worshipper has named what their passion could cost someone else. Kaelith blesses boldness, but the oldest priests insist the Heart of Flame has seen enough destruction committed by people certain that feeling strongly made them right.
