Tessael

Queen of Crows

✎ Edit☷ Tools

Tessael circles above approaching war, trading useful lies and bloody omens for the secrets left among the dead.

The crow does not cause the battle. It merely arrives before the soldiers admit there will be one.

The crown above the battlefield

Tessael manifests as a vast crow with three pale eyes or as a black-feathered queen whose bone crown is assembled from broken treaties. Flocks gathering without food are treated as her advance court.

She delights in wars already concealed beneath diplomacy. Her omens expose that conflict is coming while obscuring who first made it inevitable.

Lies that become armies

The Queen's whispers are plausible, urgent and almost impossible to verify before action must be taken. A border patrol vanishes, a grain store burns and each side receives evidence naming the other.

Tessael feeds not on falsehood alone but on lies repeated until institutions move as if they were facts. By the time the truth emerges, the armies have reasons of their own.

Crow courts

Her devotees hang black ribbons and battlefield tokens in dead trees. They read the order in which crows land and offer the first secret taken from every corpse.

War leaders sometimes keep a Tessaelite seer despite distrusting them. The omens are often accurate. The cost is that the seer gradually becomes the only source of information the leader believes.

Counter-omens

Merynn's orders answer crow signs with public witness: accusations are spoken before both sides, evidence copied and messengers exchanged in pairs. Truth made slow and communal denies Tessael the private urgency she needs.

Killing crows is useless and widely condemned. Ordinary birds are witnesses to war, not its queen, and harming them only leaves the battlefield quieter for her voice.
