Overview
The Shattering is simultaneously creation story, divine murder and the oldest historical event with physical evidence. Mountain chains, deep bone strata and relics such as the Lantern correspond too closely to the myth to dismiss it as allegory.
Every major faith agrees that Earin was broken. They disagree over whether he became monstrous, whether the Overgods acted in necessity and whether a creator can meaningfully be killed inside his own creation.
History
Earin drew order from the void and made the Overgods. When he later took flesh, he demanded perfect obedience from what he had created. Aurelion, Verris and Kaelith resisted. Their conflict scorched the first heavens before they shattered his body.
The pieces fell through the young world. Bone became mountain, blood entered the deep places and the still-burning heart was hidden as the Lantern. Kaelith mourned near the mortal realm while the others withdrew to realms of their own making.
The present record
The event is no longer safely ancient. Earin's head lies beneath Gizmagrad, his heart has been freed and the Deep Roads expose structures that resemble a body on a continental scale.
Several modern chronologies now end the entry with a question rather than a date: if the Shattering made the world, what would Earin's resurrection unmake?
